# EV Charging Connections

In this lesson, you'll learn:
- The terms used in EV charging connections
- What the three cases of charging connections are

Our focus will be **wired** charging connections.

# Basic concepts

To charge an EV, it needs to be joined to a power supply via a *charging connection*.

# Cable, plug and connector

We're focusing on **wired** connections, which means that they use a <PickOneOfTwo answer="physical cable" distractor="wireless magnetic field" distractorFeedback="That doesn't sound like a wired connection!" />.

# EV and power supply

The cable end that connects to the socket-outlet is the <Hotspot.Blank target="plug" />. At the other end, the EV's inlet is connected to with the cable's <Hotspot.Blank target="vehicle connector" />.

# Tethered to supply equipment

Sometimes, a charging cable is tethered, or permanently fixed, on one side.

# Tethered to vehicle

The other side of a cable can also be tethered instead.

In this case, the charging cable is <PickOneOfTwo answer="permanently attached to the EV" distractor="still detachable from the EV" />.

It might seem hard to remember *which is which*, but we're going to learn some handy ways to make it stick.

# Modes of EV Charging

# What is an EV charging mode?

There are **four** standard EV charging 'modes'.

Each 'mode' is a particular **system of equipment** that can be used to charge an EV.

The modes differ on things such as:
- Which EVs they are suitable for
- What electrical current they can support
- How complex they are to set up
- What safety precautions they use

# Charging mode names

The four modes of EV charging are known, quite simply, as:
- Mode 1
- Mode 2

# Mode complexity

Generally speaking, the complexity of setup, equipment and installation needed for each EV charging mode increases for higher numbers.

In other words, <PickOneOfTwo answer="Mode 1" distractor="Mode 4" /> is the *least* complicated, and <PickOneOfTwo answer="Mode 4" distractor="Mode 1" /> is the *most* complicated.

The light from the Sun is converted into solar power on Earth through the cells in <PickOneOfTwo answer="solar panels" distractor="wind turbines" distractorFeedback="Wind turbines generate power from the wind, not the Sun." />.

They are made from a material called *silicon*, in a way such that they can absorb sunlight and generate an electrical current.

It costs money to manufacture, buy and install solar panels.
